Bedtime Battles: Settling techniques for toddlers

Settling Tips

When your child becomes tired their behaviour can be irritable and/or demanding. Respond to your child’s tired signs by having some quiet time to wind down, therefore reducing high energy activities and decreasing stimulation in preparation for bed time. A child is strongly influenced by their environment e.g. daily activities and routines. A predictable bed time routine for example bath, story time, a quick kiss and cuddle and into bed is important to help your child recognise and establish good sleeping patterns.

Some tips for helping your child get to sleep are:

  • Putting a small night light by their bed.
  • A gentle song, cuddle or story time to be tucked in.
  • Having a favourite small soft toy or similar in the cot/bed may provide comfort.
  • Offering a cup of water may also help to settle them.

Remember to also reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) by:

  • Putting your child on their back to sleep from birth.
  • Make sure your child’s head remains uncovered during sleep.
  • Keep your child smoke free.

More information on how to reduce the risk of SIDS can be found on the SIDS and Kids website or by contacting SIDS and Kids by telephone on 1300 308 307.
